Pictures of the Day

I don't know what to make of the NYTimes story (and WaPo companion) about John McCain's relationship with this lobbyist. I can't get past the fact that she looks like his wife, only younger.

Uncanny resemblence. Interesting. My second husband left me for a woman who was much younger but looked a lot like me.

I dunno. I don't know enough to judge this story, but it is creepy to me.

Sorry.

I'm also finding it pretty funny that so many lefty bloggers, who presumably defended Clinton when there was so much more evidence, are jumping all over this.

How many is "many?" As I've said for the last thousand years, picking out an example and calling it typical is simply prejudice, not statistics.

I don't give a flying fork if he had an affair or not and it isn't "liberals" making a fuss, it's the mainstream media and some homebrew reporters who have nothing better to write about. Since his is a party that created enough fake evidence to start a war, who can say they didn't cook this up to make McCain look like a Victim? It would distract from their own record of smear, fear and slime, wouldn't it?

Of course any "values" candidate who has made a career out of moral superiority and claims to be God's agent on Earth runs a strong risk of ridicule when he proves to be a hypocrite.

Lester, it's more likely true than not but I think it was engineered by the GOP. If you look at memeorandum, and I haven't read the lefty take on it, but the headlines on the right are all outrage and rallying around McCain. Which is exactly what he needed since up until now they were still ragging on him for not being their kind of conservative.

Accept there is one thread in this narrative that rings true. According to the NYT story, McCain's staff had to run interference to keep him from getting into more deep doo-doo.

McCain was in Iraq last year, and his official escort was non other than my son-in-law. According my son-in-law, McCain had a stubborn and obtuse way of not paying attention to protocol as in "Sir, we have to leave NOW!" Another quirky trait about McCain, he never flushes a toilet after he uses it.

Fogg, My comment about "many" lefty bloggers getting excited about this story was based on the lefty blogs I visit, TPM, Atrios, Americablog, who all have written many electronic inches about this.

So, yes it was a generalization, but, I'll bet I could find you "many" left sided blogs that got very excited about this thin story.

....

As someone over at my site pointed out, the very thin "romantic" angle has really crowded out the lobbyist angle which should be a far bigger deal.

Lester,

Do you do this stuff on purpose? OK sure, Murdock is a Liberal. All of the big media conglomerates are, but of course the definition of Liberal is that they disagree with your intransigent religious dogma.

Mike,

It's just that I don't know what "lefty" or Liberal" means any more. In fact the English language is becoming useless as a tool for discussing politics and I'm sure Orwell is smiling about it somewhere. Everybody loves a sex scandal, but the party that has perfumed itself with the aura of "values" is rightly vulnerable to having its Holier than Thou bubble burst.

I'm tempted to agree with Libby that this may be a false flag accusation to allow this bozo to pose as a victim and say he's never betrayed the public trust while the Keating Five scandal hangs over his head - at least for those who don't, like most people, have historical amnesia.

Being able to refute a false accusation is a great gambit because it detracts from the true accusations. It also allows the slimers to act indignant about being slimed.
