All you need is love

Happy Valentine's Day my dears. If you have a sweetie, hope you have a wonderful romantic celebration and if you're like me, and don't have one, treat yourself to something nice anyway, because you deserve the best in life either way. As my gift to you all, this post is all just fun links.

Starting with this charming love story I ran across last night. I don't know if Rosie and Aaron are for real or if it's just a underground viral ad campaign, but their Compilation Sundays photo series is really beautiful.

Marcellina has a sad yet uplifting story about her neighbor. Keep scrolling for her photos of Austria that never fail to soothe my weary soul.

I love how Phila finds the hope in the news every week. It's easy to forget good things happen too but he found a lot of them.

The irresistible Erin O'Brien goes on assignment and shows us her boudoir photo session. As an added treat, she offers up some vintage burlesque photos. These may be NSFW, if you work in an uptight place.

Tacitus Voltaire pens a love song for us. If you were lost, I'd come and find you.

My favorite sea creature has a brilliant clay animation, Octopus love.

And being me, we can't totally avoid politics, so check out DLB's Remembering Reagan. Hilarious. I loved it.

I also loved this photo of Obama in a Snuggie. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy. [h/t HBK]

Speaking of warm and fuzzy, JP dependably delivers your weekly ration of cute kittehs pix. Scroll through for Larry Elvis and Curly's latest poses. Also don't miss the newest arrival to the DFH pet zone, Maddie will melt your heart.

And newly added to the blogroll, Moonbootica posts her share of cute kitties from the UK along with the latest pop Brit tunes. Cosa Nostradamus capture beaches in Hawaii and Plantsman delivers flowers and other botanical goodies.

And lastly, a couple of more shots of my personal history. I lived on a farm down the hill from William Cullen Bryant Homestead for many years. I never took the tour, but I often hiked in the woods behind it. And I always loved Northampton's City Hall. The inside of that building was just as beautiful.

Happy Day my darling readers. I love you all dearly.

Happy V-Weekend, Libby!

Thanks for blogrolling me. Both your blogs are now blogrolled on mine.

Billie Holiday & Mick Jagger, together again at last, singing your favorite love songs. For anybody who didn't get none yesterday. It's hard not to whistle.

Hey Cosa. I'm sorry on the delay in blogrolling. I thought I had done it weeks ago. And thanks for the reciprocal links. Appreciate it.

AND, what a stellar lineup of music vids at that link. Another candidate for the next linkfest.

By the way, I was reading something this morning that said Hawaii was one of the best states to get a job. You think that's true?

No probs. Thanks again.

Jobs? No.

There have never been any good jobs here: It's all low-wage tourism-related. Things have been down since the Japanese bubble burst. They were starting to get better when the Bush bubble burst.

All the hotels are laying off, restaurants are closing, shopping centers are in bankruptcy, airlines out of business, government going broke, etc. It's worse than usual. And usually the prices are double, the wages are half what they would be in NY or CA.

There is no real industry here, so there are no real jobs. Everybody lives off their family; but that is, literally, getting old. We'll weather this recession, but Gawd help anybody that comes here without a local support network, like I did.

BYOJ ("Bring Your Own Job") is the rule. And forget about starting a business here. The State is openly hostile to non-billionaires trying to do that. (And even some billionaires, like Richard Branson of Virgin Records, Airlines, Telecomm, etc.)

When Branson crashed his globe-circumnavigating balloon in the ocean near Kauai a while ago, instead of flying the airline owner straight to the Governor's mansion for a hot shower and a hot lunch, they sent him a bill for the rescue. Virgin still doesn't fly here.

That's what I thought but someone posted a link to some article that said you can get a room and board job working with flowers or something in Hawaii. Someone else posted that there's a hippie community somewhere and a link to a cheap house for sale. I forget the name. Something that started with a P, like Paleo or something. Can't recall which island. Maybe Maui.

In any event, I'm more a mainlander myself. I figure there's much future in islands, what with global warming about to raise sea levels. I'm glad you're documenting the beauty before it's gone.

Yeah, that's called indentured servitude. Ever see "Little Shop of Horrors"? Those "flowers" are TRIFFIDS!!!

We'll be OK for a while on this island, though Waikiki and the rich folks' beaches are starting to disappear. The low, flat islands will have a problem. Micronesia is already a disaster area, and we're getting all their refugees.

There's this absurd vision of Hawaii on the Mainland, which the travel & tourism people encourage, that's it's some kind of ethereal paradise, and cheap, too. But they REALLY don't want anybody to come here without money, and lots of it.

Back in the 60's, there was a wave of people, mostly from or by way of California, who tried living down on the beach or up in the jungle, esp. on Kauai. If the Locals didn't kick their asses, nature and economics did. Hawaii is no different than any other State in America. Imagine a bunch of foreign kids crashing on your front lawn?

Try living with no money here or anywhere on this planet. The beaches are full of homeless people here, outside of the tourist areas. The sun may be warm, but it burns like Hell. It's a miserable existence, right across the highway from hostile working people and in plain view of the world, with broken public toilets and showers full of lurking creeps. Whole families live under tarps right out in the open. The cops chase them all the time. Every 48 hours, they have to move to another beach. Each Christmas, the Governor kicks them off the beaches altogether.

As to jobs, there's a lot of scams here, from Asian slavery to get-rich-quick "home businesses." There is virtually no enforcement of labor laws, consumer protection or tenants' rights. We're supposed to be a "liberal" State, but it's still a big plantation, really. As to housing, a "cheap" house on Oahu is $500,000. And that's an old shack with no yard, though the market is falling. It may be a little cheaper to buy a house on the neighbor islands, except the nice parts of Maui and the Big Island. But everything else is even more expensive than on this island, and there are NO jobs. Also no public transportation, and car insurance is the second highest in the US here. The cops make it their business to check that, with roadblocks, all the time. If you ain't got the dough-re-me... Better go back to bee-you-tee-full Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee...

The weather's nice, though.
