Protest voting
While I think President Obama is being criticized too much about things over which he really doesn't have control and not given nearly enough credit for the good things he has accomplished in the last year, Congress is a whole other matter. Ezra is right in noting that at least for one cycle, it would send a strong message to the Democrats if the progressives stay home on election day.
Seems to me that we're never going to have a safer time to try that strategy than this year. If the Democrats cave on health insurance reform now, and especially if they start racing to the right because they're so freaked out by a stupidly handled special election in MA, it's an option I'm very likely to consider.

It;s a sad fact but lazy, indifferent, or just marginal candidates want to rely far too much on the help of those they think have coattails. Coakley is one of these.
We had a successful and much loved three term mayor here in Quincy. Almost every candidate said we need the mayor to support us. e need his help. He needs to do this and that for us. Most of them lost because they didn't do the work necessary to get elected.
It seems too many are relying on Obama instead of doing the necessary work themselves to get elected. We already elected Obama. The question these people need to be answering is why should we elect them.
Coakley was a disaster. I didn't pay much attention until the end myself, since I'm not living in MA anymore, but from all I've read post-election she was the worst candidate I've seen the Dem machine produce ever. Well except for Silber.
