For whom the dog whistle blows

Granted this is one guy with a hideously racist tshirt at one Romney rally and the campaign quietly denounced the shirt, but it's not as if Team Romney hasn't been encouraging this sort of thing right along. Blow that dog whistle at the decibel level of an air raid siren and all the vicious dogs come out.

This is not at all an isolated incident. There's been hundreds of instances of this sort all over the country. And then there's the countless local Republican politicians and operatives "accidentally" sending racist emails and making racist "jokes" (and they're very sorry if anyone was offended) because it was totally not meant to be racist. I'm sure they would tell you this decoration in South Florida GOP field office was only meant in fun.

Obama on toilet paper by the shitter? Just a little bathroom humor folks. Can't be racist because there's that one black volunteer sitting over there who doesn't support Obama either.

Of course it's not just about a black president. if you live in the south, they all claim to be "not racists" and good Christians but the subtext is always lurking just under the surface of their faked civility. This isn't the first time Charles Blow posted one of his emails. It's so ugly, you'll have to see it at the link. I refuse to post such overtly racist rants in a public space. It only encourages these knuckle dragging cretins.

Very likely neither Romney nor Ryan could be termed as evil men. Since I don't know them personally it would be difficult for me to state this as absolute truth, but call me an optimist.Their problem is rooted in ignorance. Neither of these two men has any experience and therefore no concept of what it is like to hit the skids or to be different from the majority. Both of these men wear their mantle of superiority thinking that all of their support roots from folks who believe in their particular vision.

Unfortunately that isn't reality. The bigots and racists supporting them don't like them for a variety of reasons... not the least of which is their particular religious affiliations... but they ain't black so they are the lesser evil.

Alex Karis just died. My best memory of him was his role as Mongo in Blazing Saddles... a movie hit the theaters in 1975 and rather bluntly forced the silliness of discrimination into the public's face. It illustrated that greater heights can be achieved when we ignore the differences and work for common goals.

I have to wonder how it is that we have made so little progress in the 37 years since this movie made the big screen.

I lived in a liberal area for 20 years and after a while I began to believe racism didn't exist in any meaningful way. Wasn't till I moved to the south that I saw how it was still very much thriving.

Don't think R/R are racist. I think they're simply amoral opportunists. They just want to win and will do literally anything to make it happen. Which very much includes inflaming racism in those pre-disposed to it.

Romney supporters want to see Romney get elected. It is therefore logical that they (like any political supporter) would not want negative publicity for their candidate. Everyone knows that white racist slogans alienate the vast majority of Americans. The only logical conclusion is that the bald guy is a Romney opponent.

I love a good conspiracy theory. Be more willing to buy that one if this was an isolated incident, but there are so many. You might want to read upthread to the latest incidents. And those are just the ones that made the news. See also, actual GOP officials and candidates making "jokes" on a similar theme.

Libby,

I don't recall any incidents involving individuals confirmed as Romney or Tea Party supporters who displayed blatantly racist signs.

I have heard about leftists crashing Tea Party rallies, posing as straw-man conservative stereotypes.

OK, so I guess it wasn't tongue in cheek. I have to council you that this isn't the place to use such primitive and crapulous verbal chicanery and I should mention that I've personally seen Tea Potty rallies with disgusting pictures of Obama and his family with threatening verbiage attached. What you recall is of no interest.

I'm trying to categorize the attempt to pin the gun waving threats on "outside agitators" if I may resurrect a tired old gambit from the Civil Rights struggle. Is it a variant of the Fox "people are saying" technique of creating a straw movement? Perhaps it is, but quoting a T Potty website to support a T Potty attempt to hide their nature isn't all that convincing.

Perhaps you really believe this horse excrement, and perhaps you don't see the humor in your pathetic argument either. I won't call you names though. Not at this point. I don't have to, but you know people are saying. . . and of course there's this website proving that Romney was born on Mars. . .
