Many rivers to cross for Christie

While I continue to think Christie's bridge scandal will ultimately lead nowhere, the story has a lot longer legs than I first anticipated. The hundreds of pages of documents will keep the media busy for at least a couple of weeks and if it turns out the lane closures were illegal somebody could get indicted. It could become a enduring scandal of his administration. But hell, we're talking about Jersey. Politicians and their operatives are always getting caught in scandals. It's part of the fabric of life in The Garden State.

Everybody who's not a gullible, hardcore conservative knows Christie was lying his face off in that two hour pity party of a presser. Nonetheless, absent irrefutable evidence Gov. Blowhard knew about the plan to bring a little traffic trouble to Fort Lee, the story won't last into February. That's almost two years from 2016. As long as no one can prove he lied, he can brazen his way through this and come out ahead on name recognition. He's complicated the journey, but I'm not writing him off the campaign trail just yet.

He's either lying or he's telling the truth. If he's lying, he's toast.

If he's telling the truth, that he never heard about any of the frantic communications raining down on his office from Fort Lee, he is an immensely gullible and incompetent buffoon whose closest associates are crooks. They managed to operate a complicated plot out of his office without him ever finding out.

So , which is it, liar or buffoon?

still think unless there's proof he lied, he can ride it out and he might stay in because, enormous ego. He loves being the center of attention.

No one can go through the political process and get that far without an obese ego and willingness to look the other way and bend rules and all that.

But Repack here is right. If a guy can't keep tabs on what's happening in New Jersey, it doesn't speak well to his ability to be in touch with all aspects of the Federal Government or to appoint people who can be trusted to keep him informed.

But does the American public buy the "I was out of the loop" arguments from high officials? The sad truth is that we believe anything and everything and no matter how stupid or false that props up our prejudices.

It's easier to go along with the "mr. Niceguy" act and the tailor made sincerity than to form opinions from the facts especially in a country as intellectually lazy as this one. We're a country that elected Nixon and GWB twice and that still defends these crooks and liars.

By we I think you mean hard core cons. But I do continue to be amazed by the gullibility of these people and their willingness to act against their own interest.

We means the voters who actually vote. If they have more votes they are we. Democrats share blame because they tend to stay home while the fanatics show up rain or shine.

I still think that this helps him with the base. they love bullies who hurt 'libs'. Signing the DREAM Act is what's going to hurt him.

Fogg, can't argue with that. Seems like the left has as strict a freaking purity test as the right these days. Even worse, because liberals can't agree on anything, there are conflicting metrics. The right beats us because they all agree on one thing, if liberals want it, they're against it. Meanwhile there's a bunch of lefties pushing wingnut talking points. Drives me crazy.

I agree Merl. the DREAM thing is going to piss the crackpots off, but in the end, they'll vote for the Republican so all Christie has to do is survive the primary season.

Scandals don't matter. The right has been sending me banner ads for years about the devastating Obama scandal about to break any moment now. To them it's real and real scandals are not. They have no motivation to reexamine their attitudes and for many, belonging to that crowd is more important than anything else.

So true Fogg. It's very tribal on the right. That's why they're so good at uniting around one message. The left is terrible at that for the most part.
